The cardiothoracic surgery program at UCSF was established 50 years ago when Department of Surgery Chairman, Dr. Leon Goldman, father of California Senator Diane Feinstein, asked Dr. Benson Roe to join the faculty and establish a division for this new subspecialty; Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Roe's pioneering work continues today through the leadership of Cardiothoracic Surgery Chief, Dr. Scot Merrick. The Division maintains a fully accredited training program in cardiothoracic surgery with rotations in adult and pediatric cardiac and thoracic surgery helping to produce several distinguished leaders in cardiothoracic surgery.

In 2007, US News and World Reports listed Cardiac Care at UCSF in the top 20 nationally. The Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF is comprised of both the Cardiac and General Thoracic Sections as well as the Heart and Lung Transplant Program. Our Heart & Lung Transplant program, directed by Charles Hoopes, M.D., by was
recently highlighted as our 1 year survival outcomes in 2007 were better than expected when ranked with other academic institutions nationally.
